European democracy week

The European Local Democracy Week (ELDW) is an annual European event where local authorities and associations from the 47 Council of Europe member States organise public initiatives to meet and engage with their citizens on issues of local interest. The aim is to promote and foster democratic participation at local level.

This year Harvest Digital Planning is collaborating with the Municipality of Valongo Portugal (approximately 100,000 inhabitants across a 75 km2 territory) . Valongo is strategically located in the Metropolitan Area of Porto (AMP), the second largest city in Portugal.

“At a time when there are several threats to freedom and other values of democracy that we have been conquering over the centuries, we have also taken on the task of placing the Municipality of Valongo at the forefront of the formation of a More Informed and More Participatory Community. Democracy in a poorly informed and poorly educated community can be held hostage by the tyrannies of majorities as well by the tyrannies of minorities, which should be avoided vehemently through constant investment in Full Citizenship.”
- José Manuel Ribeiro - President of Valongo Municipal Council

Harvest is delighted to be invited by our partner WireMaze to attend City Councils of the Future to present our case study: Engagement of Children as Citizens with Banyule City Council.

Co-creating the session with Portugal’s Valongo municipality Youth and Citizenship director is a honour.
